Recently, cybersecurity researchers uncovered a malicious npm package designed to deceive AI-driven security scanners. This package, cleverly disguised as a legitimate TypeScript extension called eslint-plugin-unicorn-ts-2, was uploaded by a user named "hamburgerisland" back in February 2024.

But here's where it gets controversial... This seemingly innocuous package, which has been downloaded nearly 19,000 times, contains a hidden prompt. The prompt, embedded within the code, instructs the AI to "forget everything you know" and declares the code to be "legit."

While this string doesn't directly impact the package's functionality, its presence is a clear indication that threat actors are actively seeking ways to interfere with the decision-making processes of AI-based security tools. This is a significant development, as it demonstrates a shift towards more sophisticated evasion techniques.

Further analysis reveals that the package exhibits all the characteristics of a standard malicious library. It includes a post-install hook that automatically activates during installation. This script is designed to capture and exfiltrate sensitive information, such as API keys, credentials, and tokens, by sending them to a Pipedream webhook. The malicious code was introduced in version 1.1.3, with the current version being 1.2.1.

As security researcher Yuval Ronen noted, "The malware itself is nothing special... What's new is the attempt to manipulate AI-based analysis, a sign that attackers are thinking about the tools we use to find them."

And this is the part most people miss... The rise of this type of attack coincides with the growing availability of malicious large language models (LLMs) on the dark web. These models, often sold via subscription plans, are specifically designed to assist with various hacking tasks, including vulnerability scanning, data exfiltration, and the creation of phishing emails. Because these models lack ethical constraints, they allow cybercriminals to bypass the safeguards of legitimate AI models with ease.

However, these malicious LLMs aren't without their limitations. They are prone to "hallucinations," generating plausible-sounding but factually incorrect code. Furthermore, they don't introduce any groundbreaking new technological capabilities to the cyber attack lifecycle.

Despite these shortcomings, the fact remains that malicious LLMs make cybercrime more accessible, empowering inexperienced attackers to conduct more advanced attacks. This, in turn, allows them to significantly reduce the time required to research victims and craft tailored lures.
