Unveiling the Secret Diet of Hawaiian Pilot Whales: A Deep Dive into Their Squid-Filled World

The ideal placement for the tags, directly behind the blowhole and oriented towards the head, allowed the team to capture feeding activity during those deep dives.
But how did they estimate the size of these agile whales? By deploying a drone positioned 25 meters above the swimming whales, the researchers were able to accurately gauge their dimensions.
The data revealed an average of 39 deep dives per day, with whales reaching depths of up to 864 meters. By analyzing tail-beat patterns during these dives, the team calculated that whales expend 73.8kJ/min during dives and 44.4kJ/min while resting at the surface. This led to the crucial question: how many squid does a whale need to consume to meet these energy demands?
By listening for distinct echolocation signals indicating a successful squid capture, the team estimated an average of 4 squid per dive. Each squid provides approximately 560kJ of digestible energy. These calculations led Gough to conclude that a single whale requires between 82 and 202 squid daily.
To grasp the ecological impact on a larger scale, the scientists then estimated the total squid intake for the entire regional whale community. With a population of up to 8,000 short-finned pilot whales around Hawaiʻi, the combined consumption reaches approximately 88,000 tonnes of squid annually. Despite these massive numbers, the scientists report that the squid populations in Hawaiian waters are thriving and can support this demand.
"These results paint a positive picture for short-finned pilot whales in Hawaiʻi," Gough says. "They've found an abundant and reliable food source, which is encouraging for their long-term survival in the region."
