It's no secret that many automakers struggle with timely feature rollouts, often delivering updates months after the initial promise. And when they do arrive, they can be buggy and underwhelming. However, Google's expertise in software development and the robust Android Automotive OS could set the upcoming 2026 Polestar 4 apart.
Imagine a navigation system that not only guides you to your destination but also ensures you stay in the correct lane, especially in complex road layouts. That's the promise of Live Lane Guidance, which I had the chance to preview during my test drive of the Polestar 4 in Austin, Texas. Although the feature was inactive during my test, Polestar has now revealed more exciting details.
Here's how it works: Google's advanced AI analyzes elements like lane markings and road signs captured by the forward-facing cameras in the Polestar 4. This real-time analysis helps the system determine the vehicle's lane position and provides a live visualization on the instrument cluster.
But here's where it gets interesting: if you start veering off the route, the system will gently nudge you back on track with audio and visual alerts. This is a significant upgrade from the traditional top-down GPS view, especially in areas with poor GPS accuracy, like Manhattan, where tall buildings can interfere with satellite signals.
And this is the part most people miss: by combining camera input, AI, and GPS, the system can better understand complex road conditions, such as flyovers and service roads, or multi-lane highways. This could potentially make it more reliable than Apple CarPlay, which is currently favored by many drivers for its simplicity and navigation features.
The feature will first be available on select highways in Sweden and the U.S., but will it deliver on its promise? We'll have to wait and see when Polestar releases it in the coming months.
